October in Big Bend is usually warm to hot at low elevation and pleasant in the Chisos. NPS averages for October put the Chisos Basin (about 5,400 feet) around 74°F by day and 53°F at night, Panther Junction around 80°F, and the river corridor near 90°F. Evenings in the basin cool quickly. Storms can still build suddenly, with lightning on exposed ridges and flash floods in washes and narrow canyons. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the NWS forecast before you go.
