From late May to September, Balmorhea's low desert is usually hot and very sunny by midday, while Alpine and Fort Davis, higher up, are a little milder and cool off quickly after sunset. Mid- and late summer often bring afternoon thunderstorms with lightning, gusty wind and brief heavy rain, and dips in the road can flood. The spring water stays 72–76°F, which feels cold on a breezy morning. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the NWS forecast the evening before and the morning of your trip.
