From late May through September the Hill Country west of Austin is hot and often humid, with afternoon highs usually in the 90s°F and July and August frequently near or above 100°F. Mornings are the most comfortable time to hike, and bare limestone reflects heat while shade on the trails is patchy. Late May and June, and again in September, can bring heavy thunderstorms that quickly raise the Pedernales River, close low-water crossings and shut swimming at Hamilton Pool. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the NWS forecast and avoid the river when storms are expected upstream.
