Mount Washington Summit day trip

Mount Washington Summit Day

A long, honest day from Boston to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington: drive the steep Mt. Washington Auto Road (or ride the Cog Railway), visit the state park summit building and the Observatory's small weather museum, then come down to Pinkham Notch, the short walk to Glen Ellis Falls and Jackson's red covered bridge before the drive home.

Plan for the conditions

Expected seasonal weather

From June to early October the valleys around Pinkham Notch are usually mild to warm, but the summit sits far higher and is much colder and windier. NH State Parks puts the summit's average temperature at 27.1°F and its average wind at 35 mph. It is often in cloud, summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms, and by late September frost, rime ice and snow are possible on top. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the Observatory's Higher Summits Forecast and the NWS forecast the evening before and the morning of your trip.

Admission and parking are separate. Check current conditions before departure.

A good day, in the bag.
