Big Sur Coast weekend

Big Sur Coast Weekend

A two-night weekend on the Big Sur coast from the San Francisco Bay Area. Drive down on Friday afternoon, stretch your legs on Carmel Beach and settle into a Big Sur base before dark. Saturday is the coast itself: Bixby Bridge, the redwoods at Pfeiffer Big Sur, Pfeiffer Beach, lunch at Nepenthe and McWay Falls. Sunday is lighter, with an early walk at Point Lobos and a drive home before the afternoon traffic.

Plan for the conditions

Expected seasonal weather

Spring and fall are usually Big Sur's best weather. April and May bring green hills and wildflowers, with mild days and patchy morning fog. September and October are often the clearest and warmest months on the coast, with light wind and long views, though fire season can bring smoke. June to August is often foggy and cool on the shore, with clearer, warmer air just inland in the redwood valley. Winter brings Pacific storms, heavy rain, high surf, rockfall and slides that can close Highway 1. Coast temperatures stay mild most of the year, but wind and fog make it feel colder. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel dates. Check the NWS San Francisco Bay Area forecast before you go and each morning.

Admission and parking are separate. Check current conditions before departure.

A good day, in the bag.
