Plan for the conditions

Expected seasonal weather

From late May to October, the High Country is far cooler than Charlotte: summer days in Blowing Rock and Boone are usually pleasant, but afternoon thunderstorms are common and can close the swinging bridge. October brings crisp, clear days and frosty nights, with fall color usually peaking at the higher elevations around Grandfather Mountain in early to mid October and lower in the valleys later. Linville Peak is often 10 to 20 degrees colder than the lowlands and one of the windiest places in North Carolina, and clouds can wrap the summit at any time of year. Fog is common on the Parkway and the US 321 climb. From November to March, expect cold, wind and occasional snow or ice; Parkway sections close, and Grandfather may close its upper mountain. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the NWS forecast.

A good day, in the bag.
