Assateague and Ocean City weekend

Assateague and Ocean City Weekend

A two-night beach weekend on Maryland's Atlantic coast from Baltimore. Cross the Bay Bridge on Friday afternoon and spend the evening in historic Berlin. Saturday belongs to Assateague Island: wild horses on the bayside at dawn, the three short nature trails, a beach afternoon at Assateague State Park and an optional paddle on Sinepuxent Bay, then the Ocean City Boardwalk at dusk. Sunday is lighter, with a morning on the boards to the Inlet, the Life-Saving Station Museum and an early start home.

Plan for the conditions

Expected seasonal weather

In September and early October, days on the Maryland coast are usually warm and breezy, nights cooler, and the ocean is still at its warmest of the year after the summer. It's also the peak of hurricane season, when distant storms can bring high surf and dangerous rip currents even on sunny days, and nor'easters can bring days of wind and rain. Late May and June are milder, with cooler water. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Mosquitoes are worst on still, warm evenings near the marsh. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel dates. Check the NWS Wakefield forecast before you go and each morning.

Admission and parking are separate. Check current conditions before departure.

A good day, in the bag.
