From July into early October the mountain is usually at its driest and most reliably clear, with mild days at Government Camp and cooler, windier conditions around Timberline, near 6,000 feet. Expect a big change as you climb from Portland through Welches: Timberline can be near freezing on a morning when Portland is mild. Late summer can bring wildfire smoke that hides the mountain, and by October rain, fog, frost and the first snow return; from November through spring, snow and ice on US 26 and Timberline Road are normal. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the NWS forecast for the elevation you are visiting, the snow level and the Timberline cameras.
