Plan for the conditions

Expected seasonal weather

From June through September, Georgetown and Idaho Springs usually have mild, sunny mornings and cool evenings, while Guanella Pass, above treeline, is colder and often windy. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning and brief hail are common in July and August, so plan the pass and any open-air time for the morning. September brings crisp, clear days and the aspen color, but frost and the first snow can arrive at high elevation. The mine stays near 44°F all year, and holiday-train evenings in November and December are often below freezing. These are seasonal expectations, not a forecast for your travel date; check the NWS forecast.
