A long day, not a leisurely coast weekend. Keep Ecola optional and choose one main Astoria attraction. October has shorter daylight and possible storms. No exact travel date was supplied, so tide times are not built into the schedule. Checked October 8, 2026.

Your full-day itinerary

Times are planning estimates. Trim optional stops when traffic, weather, or queues run long.

7:45 am

Leave Portland for Tillamook

Drive · allow 2–2¼ hours

Take US 26 west to OR 6 toward Tillamook, then US 101 to the Creamery. Fuel or charge before leaving. A quick coffee stop fits; do not arrive expecting the Creamery to open before 10 am.

Tillamook Creamery: cheese, exhibits, and ice cream

75–90 minutes

Explore the self-guided exhibits and viewing area, shop, and get a snack or ice cream. General entry and the self-guided tour do not require reservations. Current hours are 10 am–6 pm daily, with holiday and occasional early closures. Packaging is scheduled Monday–Saturday, so factory activity is not guaranteed on Sunday. Address: 4165 Highway 101 North.

11:30 am

Drive north toward Cannon Beach

Drive · allow 1¼–1½ hours

Follow US 101 through the north coast towns. Use safe designated pullouts for a brief scenic stop only if ahead of schedule. Skip the Three Capes loop, Cape Meares, and longer hikes on this three-town day.

1:00 pm

Cannon Beach: lunch and Haystack Rock

About 2 hours

Have lunch in town, then use a legal public beach access for a walk and photos. Tolovana is the navigation anchor; reaching Haystack Rock from there takes a beach walk of roughly a mile each way. For a shorter outing, use an available signed public access closer to the rock. Sand, steps, and tides can limit accessibility. Tidepools are a low-tide activity: the 1 pm arrival is not a tide prediction. Stay on safe dry sand if tides or waves are unsuitable.

3:00 pm

Optional Ecola viewpoint—or drive straight to Astoria

Optional · 30–45 minutes plus detour

If access is open, visibility is good, and you are on time, make a short viewpoint stop at Ecola Point. Skip Indian Beach and trail loops on this schedule. The west section of Clatsop Loop Trail is closed for an active landslide as of the check date. If late or stormy, go directly north on US 101.

4:15 pm

Astoria Column and the riverfront

About 1½–2 hours

Start with the hilltop views and artwork at the Astoria Column. Climb only if the stairs are open and you are comfortable with them; the grounds offer views without a climb. Then head to the riverfront for a short walk and an early dinner. Current Column parking is $10 per vehicle, valid for one year; the grounds and climb are free. The gift shop closes at 5 pm in October–March.

6:15 pm

Return to Portland on US 30

Drive · allow 2–2½ hours

Head east on US 30 rather than retracing the coastal route. Expect a return drive after dark in October. Take a rest break, keep the driver fresh, and allow extra time for rain or traffic. Estimated arrival: 8:30–9 pm.

Reddit Recommends

A few ideas from fellow travelers, chosen to fit this day—not make it longer.

These are summaries of individual Reddit comments, not a Reddit endorsement or a verified consensus. We checked the linked discussions and current venue sources on October 8, 2026. Opinions can be old or conflicting; check hours, menus, access and availability directly.

A useful reality check: older Reddit comments recommend Sleepy Monk coffee in Cannon Beach, but the owner says its café has permanently closed. It is excluded from this guide. The roastery still operates.

Rules and pitfalls to plan around

Ocean hazards are the biggest pitfall

Sneaker waves can reach far up the beach and move heavy logs. Keep watching the ocean, stay off driftwood near the water, and leave the beach during high-surf or beach-hazard warnings. Cold surf and rip currents make casual wading a poor choice for this sightseeing day.

National Weather Service beach safety

Haystack Rock is protected

Do not climb above the barnacle line or remove animals or materials within the protected area around Haystack Rock. Walk on sand and bare rock instead of marine life. Respect signs and refuge boundaries; keep pets away from wildlife. Puffin viewing is seasonal, so do not expect October puffins.

Protected-area visitor rules

Ecola: permits, trails, pets, and drones

A day-use parking permit is required; buy it on site or confirm your accepted pass. Do not assume a federal national-park pass covers Oregon state parking. Pets in the park must be leashed at six feet or less. Drones and overnight parking are prohibited. Respect landslide closures and fences; the access road is tight and winding.

Official Ecola rules and notices

Column: current fees and restrictions

The official Column website lists $10 parking, while some older listings still say $5. Use the current operator information. No drones, camping, or cooking on the grounds. Park hours are currently 5 am–10 pm; weather or stair closures can still affect the climb.

Column operator information

Creamery: pets and purchases

Pets are not allowed inside; qualifying service animals are permitted. Do not leave pets unattended in vehicles. General tours do not need reservations, but premium experiences may. Bring a cooler with ice packs if buying dairy to carry all afternoon.

Creamery policies

Weather, parking, and a tired driver

US 101 and OR 6 can be slower than expected in rain, fog, construction, and weekend traffic. Use designated parking, follow local signs, and do not block private driveways. Storms can cause road closures: check ODOT. If the driver is tired, shorten the trip and take a rest break.

ODOT TripCheck

Pack for an October coast day

  • Rain shell, warm layers, sturdy shoes, and dry socks.
  • Water, snacks, a backup meal, and a cooler for dairy purchases.
  • Charged phone, power bank, downloaded maps, and a small first-aid kit.
  • A flashlight for the late return and card payment for parking or admission.

Check before leaving

Road closures, coastal weather and surf alerts, Cannon Beach tides, Creamery hours, Ecola access, and Column notices. Save maps covering Portland, OR 6, US 101, Astoria, and US 30. In an emergency call 911. If strong coastal shaking occurs or a tsunami warning is issued, move inland and uphill using posted evacuation routes.

Change Portland to your exact starting address. Google Maps links include stops; Waze and Apple Maps links below open one destination at a time from your current location. Confirm every result and road before starting.

The full loop uses three intermediate stops to fit mobile-browser limits. Ecola and the museum are separate choices. The full-loop link ends at Portland; use your home address for the final leg.

Destination links point to visitor areas, not hiking routes. Tolovana is a public beach-access anchor, not a promise of parking or an accessible path to Haystack Rock. No link reserves parking or overrides a closure.

Expected October weather

These are typical October conditions, not a forecast for your travel date. Check the linked forecast and warnings the evening before and again before leaving. Conditions can be substantially warmer, colder, wetter or windier than average.

Plan for cool coastal air, showers and occasional fog or low cloud along the whole route. A sheltered Tillamook stop can feel very different from windy Cannon Beach or the exposed Astoria Column. October storms may bring strong gusts, heavy rain and rough seas; views can disappear into cloud. Conditions can change between towns during this long day.

Pack waterproof and windproof layers, comfortable shoes with grip and a dry spare layer. Check each town rather than only the Portland forecast. Use the Creamery or town indoor stops in ordinary rain; skip exposed viewpoints and beaches during hazard warnings. Shorten the loop or postpone if wind or road conditions deteriorate.
